Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Wukari Local Government Area (LGA) in Taraba State is a region rich in biodiversity, which includes various wildlife species crucial for ecological balance. However, the area faces significant challenges in wildlife conservation due to geopolitical factors such as ethnic conflicts, land ownership disputes, and regional political instability (Kok & Baba, 2023). Wukari’s proximity to the Niger-Benue Confluence and its diverse ecological zones provide abundant natural resources, but these factors also attract competing land uses, such as agriculture, mining, and urbanization, which threaten wildlife habitats (Okeke & Ogunjobi, 2024).
Geopolitical dynamics, including local governance and regional resource management strategies, heavily influence conservation efforts. There is a tension between local agricultural activities and wildlife protection policies, compounded by limited funding for conservation projects. Furthermore, the involvement of local communities and political leadership is critical to the success of wildlife conservation initiatives (Ayodele & Sule, 2023). This study aims to assess the geopolitical challenges that hinder effective wildlife conservation in Wukari, focusing on land-use policies, regional cooperation, and local governance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Wildlife conservation in Wukari LGA faces significant geopolitical challenges that include land-use conflicts, political instability, and insufficient local engagement in conservation initiatives. These challenges hinder the sustainable protection of biodiversity in the area. This study investigates these geopolitical issues and assesses their impact on wildlife conservation efforts in Wukari LGA.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it addresses the pressing issue of wildlife conservation in Wukari, where geopolitical factors play a substantial role in hindering effective management and protection. The research will provide valuable insights for policymakers, conservation organizations, and local communities, offering actionable strategies to protect biodiversity while addressing the local geopolitical challenges.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Wukari LGA in Taraba State and will examine the geopolitical challenges affecting wildlife conservation. Limitations include difficulties in accessing reliable data from local government authorities and conservation bodies, as well as challenges in engaging local communities due to potential political sensitivities.
